Game Jam 2013- Live Blog Part One: Orientation
Today’s the day! Saint Louis Game Jam 2013!
Orientation has finished, obscene amounts of pizza has been delivered, and groups are settling in to argue the merits of robot penguins over onion gnomes. We’re all about to jump feet-first into 48 hours of highly caffeinated fun, and this blog will be updating every few hours.
For those of you who couldn’t make it this year, This is what the first hours of Saint Louis Game Jam are like:
Show up at Simutronics, and look for the flags! The cheery blue and green stake flags mark the door. Come on in, and grab a name tag at the table, and you can add a certain color star if you’re a programmer, artist, sound director, or developer. There’s snacks like Doritos and Cheetos on a table, and there’s a shark balloon flying through the air. Go ahead and mingle with everyone else, there are people of all ages!
David Whatley is the man of the hour, and he stands on a chair to address the crowd.
“Okay everybody!” He shouts. “Thanks for coming to 2013’s very first Game Jam! We’ve got 48 hours to break into teams and create games based around a theme. Now, your game can be a PC game, console, board game, card game, GPS-geocaching whatever-you-call-it game, anything.”
This year there’s nearly twenty-five Geocachers, who do treasure hunting by GPS. They’re planning to do a Geocaching-based game like they did last year.
“Our 48 countdown for Game Jam starts here in a few minutes. We’ve also got pizza on the way, nothing healthy. If you’ve got special dietary needs, I’m not a mind reader, I don’t care. Plenty of fast food around here, and we’ll have healthier stuff tomorrow… I think. Now here’s the big announcement, this year’s theme is PERSPECTIVE.”
David goes on to describe how we’ll break into groups, and takes a count of how many group leaders there are. There’s eight group leaders. Then, everything breaks into chaos as the group leaders pull their groups together. Every group needs to have at least one programmer, one artist, and one developer.
Most groups head directly to the wall-to-wall white board to start brainstorming….. and away we go! Check back for updates.
