Look at a calendar right now. How’s it look? Look specifically at two weekends from now. If you see anything there that doesn’t say, “Unleash inner game developer by rocking face at the Game Jam” you might want to grab some white out, because the Game Jam begins just two weeks from tonight!

If you want a sneak peek at this scene, or are wondering what the heck this Game Jam thing really is, there are a few get-togethers you can attend in preparation. The first one is . It’s next Monday (January 14th), and Game Jam aficionado Elonka Dunin will describe the structure of the jam and go over a few dos and don’ts in a hands-on workshop context. It’s not mandatory for attending the jam unless you find it mandatory to have a good time.

The second meetup will be an  by Simutronics President and St. Louis legend David Whatley. If you’ve always wanted to make games but think programming sounds too hard, you definitely shouldn’t miss this meetup. And yeah, everyone else should attend as well. Stencyl is an exciting tool that makes it easy to create and publish your own Flash and iOS games. At this meetup you’ll get an overview of how to use the tool and gain an understanding of its strengths and drawbacks. Being able to quickly churn out a prototype is what a Game Jam is best for, so this tool could be exactly the thing that lets you focus on ideas instead of algorithms.

Anyone and everyone is welcome at either of the meetups, but if you can, please RSVP at the meetup site. More important than that though, please, Please, PLEASE register for the Game Jam at the Global Game Jam site ASAP. We’re expecting it to be huge this year, and signing up through the site helps us with logistics. To sweeten the deal we’ve also decided that if you don’t sign up in advance you won’t be eligible for a free T-Shirt. Supplies are VERY limited and you’ll need an account to submit your game anyway so you might as well sign up now.

It’s not hyperbole when I say that there’s never been a better time to get involved in the St. Louis Game Development Scene. Now is the time. Jam with us in a few weeks and your life will never be the same again! (Ok that was hyperbole, but whatever)
